Hypoallergenic dog breeds are the most suitable for people who are allergic to dog dander and fur. (...)

Hypoallergenic dog breeds are the most suitable for people who are allergic to dog dander and fur. Some of the more popular hypoallergenic dog breeds include terrier, basenji, bichon frise, poodle, chinese crested, greyhound, havanese, irish water spaniel, and shih tzu.

While they do produce some dander, the dander of hypoallogenic dogs is little enough to create minimal discomfort for those who come in contact with them. There are many breeds of hypoallergenic dog. Many of them are miniatures or toys that have lots of energy and may have difficult temperaments for the more sedate dog owner.

Nonetheless, even the allergic dog owner can follow a few simple steps to limit discomfort and enjoy your life with your furry companion. These tips will also generally apply to any household welcoming a new dog into its family, especially the hypoallergenic dog breeds.

A new dog (no matter how old) may well be frightened during its first hours and days in your house. Hypoallergenic dog breeds tend to be a bit more nervous than others. It may not welcome human contact at first, so you should refrain from handling them too much the first few days. Be attentive, but don't smother them with affection. Let them acclimate to their new house. Just let your new dog roam around the house, sniff the furniture, and find its way around.

When your new hypoallergenic dog becomes accustomed to its new surroundings, begin a grooming routine to reduce the amount of dander and fur that might otherwise settle on your furniture, carpets, and clothing. In addition to reducing your danger of allergic reactions, regular brushing will reduce matting and knots that make your hypoallergenic dog uncomfortable and unattractive. A steel comb with wide teeth will help untangle knots and trap loose hair. It's important not to let your hypoallergenic dog's skin get too dry with all the brushing and grooming. You can find products at the pet store or through your veterinarian that will help reduce skin problems.

Giving your hypoallergenic dog plenty of exercise will also reduce your risk of allergic reaction. First, the fresh air will help keep its fur free of dander. Second, when your dog is tired and sleeps all night, it will be less likely to want your company while you sleep, spending less time on your bed to leave dander and fur on your bedspread and sheets. Regular, frequent cleaning of your sheets and bedspread will also reduce your discomfort.

Make sure your hypoallergenic dog has a special place of its own to sleep, day and night. A soft bed or an old blanket will give them a warm, secure spot for sleeping. Wash their pet bed often so that dander and fur don't build up to a dangerous level where it can easily transfer to your carpet or clothing.

You can't avoid some allergens from being present in your home, even with a hypoallergenic dog breed, so it's important to keep your home well-vacuumed and clean at all times to maintain your good health as well.

Regular grooming is perhaps more important for hypoallergenic dog breeds than for others, especially when you have allergies to your baby. Even dogs with short hair need regular professional grooming. For people with allergies, monthly baths are a must! This will not only protect you from allergies, but it will assure your hypoallergenic dog a long, happy, healthy life.

Remember that even hypoallergenic dog breeds can still cause allergy attacks now and then. Be sure you visit your doctor when you get your dog and continue to follow your personal preventive routine to prevent serious problems with your allergies.

Buying a hypoallergenic dog may be a great solution for reducing your allergic reactions to dog hair and dander, but you should know that these dogs have special grooming needs. (...)

Buying a hypoallergenic dog may be a great solution for reducing your allergic reactions to dog hair and dander, but you should know that these dogs have special grooming needs. Most hypoallergenic dogs have short fur that is more like human hair that dog fur. This means that they shed as much and need as many haircuts as their human companions.

Grooming is a very important part of caring for a hypoallergenic dog, and if you don't have time to do it yourself, plan on regular visits to the professional groomer. You should plan on daily brushings and monthly baths. If you don't have the time and can't afford to pay for this service, you may want to consider getting another breed.

Some of the more popular hypoallergenic dog breeds include terrier, basenji, bichon frise, poodle, chinese crested, greyhound, havanese, irish water spaniel, and shih tzu. Most of these are smaller dogs, and many of them are quite temperamental. Until your dog has grown accustomed to the grooming routine, he may growl and snip at you.

If you can't cope with these temper tantrums, you may want to use the professional groomer to trim and bathe your hypoallergenic dog. Chain pet stores normally have a grooming department, and you'll be able to find many groomers in the yellow pages. Some groomers will even come to you in their mobile grooming vans. But while finding a groomer may be easy, finding one you can depend on may be more of a challenge.

The first time you trim your hypoallergenic dog's air, you'll decide how long you want to leave the remaining coat. You may choose the show-dog cut, but you are not limited to that look. After the trim is done (whether by a groomer or you), inspect the job to be sure the cut is even and that the dog's skin is cut-, scrape-, and scratch-free. You may need to apply a small amount of antibiotic to any breaks in the skin as a precaution.

It's a good idea to have your hypoallergenic dog's face hair and nails trimmed at the same time as the regular cut. Most dogs do not like the pedicure but, with practice patience, you can win their cooperation. It's important to regularly clip your dog's nails, as they can become a health hazard if they grow too long. Clip up to about 2 millimeters (1/16 inch) from the cuticle, and expect at least a little bleeding. Keep styptic powder handy just in case.

Most hypoallergenic dogs will enjoy the daily brushing, and it's important to maintain this habit to prevent shedding, matting, and "alien" debris from collecting in your dog's coat. If your long-hair hypoallergenic dog has persistent knots in his fur, you may want to brush it more often or maintain a closer trim.

Aside from the benefits of good hygiene and proper grooming, caring for your hypoallergenic dog this way gives you time to share physical affection and devoted attention to your hypoallergenic dog. Many people who are not comfortable with normal dogs will enjoy the company of a hypoallergenic dog, so you should maintain a beautiful healthy coat at all times. Your special hypoallergenic dog may be a bit of a prima dona, and the attention they receive from both friends and strangers will only confirm their valuable opinions of themselves.

Hypoallergenic breeds tend to be small, cute, and cuddly - if a bit nervous or temperamental. But if you have allergies or are sensitive to dog fur and dander, you may find a hypoallergenic dog to be the best friend you ever had. Show him how much you appreciate him by providing, regular thorough grooming and bathing. You'll be glad you did.

Does the coat of a Bichon Frise have to be clipped regulary and do they have to be groomed a lot? Does it have to be tended for as much as a Shih Tzu coat- more or less?

Thanks for answers

They need regular trips to the groomer for a cut about every 6 weeks they also nee daily grooming. It all depends n the clip about how much work and if they needthe same as shih tzu . If you keep either cuts in just a short gerenal clip and not a show then they are less work. But both breeds need regualr coat care and it is not cheap.,

Most pet owners know that there's no such thing as a non-shedding dog. (...)

Most pet owners know that there's no such thing as a non-shedding dog. Even hairless dogs shed flakes or scales of dead skin and dog hair, called dander, that settles like dust on flooring and furniture. Some experts believe that dander is a bigger problem than loose dog hair for allergy sufferers. But people who must keep their dog indoors or who are allergic to dog hair and dander do have answers. There are ways to minimize the problem.

If you're thinking of bringing a new furry friend into your home, you may want to consider a "non-shedding" dog. Though you'll still have to cope with dander, non- and low-shedding dogs, also known as hypoallergenic dogs, don't produce as many allergens as other breeds and are better companions for people with allergies.

No matter what kind of dog you have, the first and most important strategy to reduce shedding dog hair and dander is to follow a regular grooming routine. Daily brushing or combing catches dog hair before it hits your furniture or carpet. It's much easier to remove dog hair and dander from a brush or comb. And regular shampoos and trims will not only reduce shedding, they'll keep your dog's hair healthy and shiny. Regular baths and trims keep both you and your dog more comfortable.

Ready to Go Hairless?

When selecting your non-shedding dog, consider first one of the hairless breeds. They may not be as cute as their furry counterparts, but they have the great temperaments of all dogs. Hairless breeds do shed dander, but the ongoing problem of dog hair and dander is much easier to live with. These breeds may have more skin-related problems, and you may need to use sunscreen if you take them outdoors for long periods. Hairless breeds include the Hairless Khala, Chinese Crested, American Hairless Terrier, Peruvian Inca Orchid (or PIO), and the Xoloitzcuintie (or Mexican Hairless).

Low- and Non-Shedding Breeds

If hairless dogs don't suit your taste, you can choose from the so-called non-shedding breeds that lose less dog hair and dander than most. They come in all sizes and temperaments and make great companions. Some of them have a single layer of dog hair, better for low shedding, or dog hair that is more like human hair.

Single-coated breeds don't have the thick undercoat that other dogs shed in spring. Single-coat dogs include the Power Puff Chinese Crested (Powder Puff), Poodles, Schnauzers, Portuguese Water Dog, Bichon Frise, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Coton de Tulear, Kerry Blue Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, and Bedlington Terrier

Smaller low- and non-sheding breeds not among the single-coated variety include many different terriers. In addition to the single-coated West Highland Terrier (Westie) that may be a better choice for allergy sufferers are the Yorkshire, Border, Cairn, Norfolk, Silky, Welsh, Boston, Scottish, and Australian Terrier. Other small non-shedding breeds include the Shih Tzu, Maltese (a close relative of the Bichon Frise), short-haired Dachshund, Bichon Frise, Miniature Poodle, Italian Greyhound, Havanese, Miniature Schnauzer, and Powder Puff Chinese Crested.

You can also choose from a number of medium- to large-sized non-shedding breeds: Basenji, Poodles, Schnauzers, Portuguese Water Dog, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Coton de Tulear, Kerry Blue Terrier, and Bedlington Terrier.

Facts to Remember

If you want a non-shedding breed, you will probably want to shop with breeders. For humanitarian reasons, rescuing dogs from the shelter is a compassionate way to get a great furry companion. But shelters have little information about the purity of breeds they house. Even if it looks like a non-shedding dog, it may not be that genetically. If dog hair and dander is a significant problem for you, work with professional dog breeders.

Having discussed the breeds of non-shedding dogs available today, it's important to keep in mind a few basic facts:

* All dogs shed dander, and dander is the most likely culprit when it comes to allergies.
* All dogs shed some dog hair, even the hairless varieties.
* All dogs, even non-shedding varieties, require time, effort, and loving care.
* The best way to reduce shedding, even in non-shedding breeds, is to stick to a regular grooming routine.
* Pure-bred non-shedding breeds may be genetically predisposed to specific, sometimes serious health problems.
* Be sure that the non-shedding breed you select has the temperament appropriate for your lifestyle and personality.
* Unless you've done careful homework about your breeder, you may not get what you think you're getting.

In this article we explain the fundamentals of choosing the best kind of hypoallergenic dogs and outline the virtues of each type mentioned here for your convenience as a dog-lover and potential pet dog owner so you can make an informed choice about which to bring home â?? (...)

In this article we explain the fundamentals of choosing the best kind of hypoallergenic dogs and outline the virtues of each type mentioned here for your convenience as a dog-lover and potential pet dog owner so you can make an informed choice about which to bring home â?? without any health hassles.

A lot of times, people fail to understand the importance of taking all adequate measures to ensure their allergies don't get triggered off by the external factors around them or sometimes, people may not even be aware that certain breeds of dogs may be categorized as hypo or non-hypo allergenic, based on their traits. Thus, the emphasis on choosing the right kind of pet dog is increasing with the aim of educating dog lovers to picking and keeping their favorite pet at home with minimum fuss about how they can adversely be affected by the hypoallergenic dog.

While it is true that having one is not the ultimate solution to all your allergy issues, it is also true that there are some specific dog-breeds that are less likely to trigger off allergies in people and thus less troublesome to keep in homes and farms. These are the breeds we list below for your knowledge: -

â?¢ Terrier Dogs â?? have short coats, may be silky but mostly glossy and thus since they do have an under-coat, they are easy to brush and groom on a regular basis so make for ideal furry companions â?? minus the fuss of cleaning up on tufts of loose, shedding fur around the house. Thus, they are also prime candidates for people with known allergies and also for households with other animals that are prone to allergic reactions from dogs with generous fur. Though they were originally hunting dogs and used to fight the menace of vermin, they are increasing becoming popular as small pet dogs that are easy to look after and require very little maintenance!

â?¢ Greyhound dogs â?? are available in many varieties thanks to cross-breeding as well as other environmental changes; fast and courageous dogs, they are typically sit-along companions for persons with a quiet disposition as they do not enjoy running for long periods. Short hair and again no undercoat like the terrier breed makes for happy greyhound owners as they are not known to trigger off allergies in humans. But, the downside to owning a greyhound is that these dogs may be allergic to some things themselves, so as the owner you need to be alert to their reactions to things around the home.

â?¢ Bichon Frise dog variety â?? is yet another great choice for those looking at a hypoallergenic pet and even though it has an undercoat, it is unlikely to hold much dander or hair allergy problems since this part is very springy. Small in stature and generally happy by nature, this dog breed calls for more grooming that the above varieties as it can otherwise deviate from giving their typical marshmallow look!

Do remember that when buying a hypoallergenic dog, you consider the severity of your allergies and energy levels before bringing home either a small or large variety of any of these.

I was wondering if any breeds would play with him . Cause first of all my dog is the size of a large cat ( some of his pills are for cats ) and second of all Bichon Frise's go really well with cats . I am thinking of getting a cat please help !

I would go to a shelter and ask for a cat that has been in a home with dogs before (and got along with them). The good thing is that you got the dog first. Cats, if not used to being around many animals since "kittenhood", will rarely accept a new pet in the family. See how your dog is around cats, then introduce the cat you get slowly to the dog. Keep them in separate rooms for a while and let them meet a few minutes a day, gradually making it longer until they seem to get along fine. How about a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cats? These are big breeds that can hold their own and therefore won't be too scared of your dog.
