Which Dog Should I Get a Bichon Frise or a German Shepard?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

see i want a bichon frise and my dad and brother wants a german shepard and if you dont know what that is go to google images and type in bichon frises there soo cute thanks bye

I have a Bichon! They are so cute! If you get one from a good breeder that breeds them for temperament and health, then you can get a good one.

Bichons are supposed love people, kids, and other animals according to their description in books and online, but I’ve seen some mean and snappy Bichons at the dog parks.
My Bichon is funny, playful, friendly, and sweet, he is a great dog! I have a brother who has a german sheppard and he says he wishes he got a dog like mine.

If you want a cuddly funny playful dog then I would go for the Bichon. If you want a protective watchdog then you can go for the sheppard.

I Have a Bichon Frise With Very Unmanageable Hair. How Can I Grow It Out Without Her Hair Becoming So Matted?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I have a female bichon frise. (for the record i don’t show her or anything, just so you don’t assume.)i love her so much and i want to take good care of her. i think it would be nice i grew out her pearly white hair for the winter. however, like many bichon frises do, she has thick, curly hair and whenever it starts to grow out it gets matted. i try to brush her every day but she really hates it. do you think i should use some hair product detangler? or do you think that will only harm her coat? thanks so much!

Here is everything you need to know:::::

Things You’ll Need:

Approximately 10-30 minutes, depending on age and size of Bichon.
A slicker brush
A stainless steel comb

Here are steps to Groom a Bichon Frise:::::

Step1:::
Find an comfortable area. This may mean sitting on the floor with your Bichon, holding your Bichon on your lap on the couch, or sitting your Bichon on the table. Find what works for you!

Step2:::
Begin with the slicker brush. It looks a bit like a torture device, but it truly is a wonderful tool! Begin brushing, remembering to brush the fur UP. Brush the back with strokes that begin at the hind end and go toward the head. Brush the legs in an upward direction. Brushing against the growth of the fur will give you fluffy results. Brushing the entire body and head is a fabulous way to loosen up tangles and will make your combing job much easier! If you or your Bichon are new to this routine, you may need to take a few breaks or do a little every day. Remember, you want this to be a positive and loving experience for your angel so that grooming time does not turn into a behavioral nightmare!

Step3:::
Now that you’ve brushed the entire body, put the slicker brush down and pick up your comb. It is essential to get down to the skin on your Bichon and comb in small sections, taking the comb and working it from the skin up. This will detangle and remove mats from the undercoat. It is very important to note that patience is key to success. Take your time and remember that every snarl and tangle can be uncomfortable for your pup, but this is vital to maintaining healthy skin and coat. Comb the entire body. Do not forget the top of the head, chin, ears and behind the ears. Back legs tend to be a bit more sensitive, so exercise caution and don’t forget to take a break if your dog has had enough

Tips & Warnings:::

Tip 1::
Before you bathe your pup, make sure to comb the entire body. Once a Bichon’s fur gets wet, any tangles or mats get even more difficult to remove!

Tip 2:::
To avoid heavy matting and tangling and make your grooming job easier, try to groom your dog every day or every other day–you will be surprised at how many tangles arrive after just one or two days!

tip 3::
If this is a new routine, you may want to concentrate on one or two areas of the body per day until you get everything de-tangled and become comfortable with your grooming tools.

Tip 4:::
Enjoy your fluffy little sweetheart and enjoy the bonding time that this will give you!

Tip 5:::
Once you are finished with your grooming session, make sure to give your sweetie a treat!! It will leave a positive impression and make next time a little easier!

Warning 1::::
If you suspect that your dog has a serious skin condition, consult with your veterinarian.

Warning 2:::
*If your dog is seriously matted, you can try to brush and comb what you can, cut any stubborn mats out or consult a professional groomer.

Warning 3:::
Don’t forget the combing and brushing a badly matted dog can be very painful for your pup! Don’t let the situation get away from you!

*And as far as Detangling goes here are some wonderful detanglers for Bichons::::

Adn if this is to much work just call around groomers and ask if they can show you how to do it. Or just simply let them Groom her. :)
But the key is with Bichons that have to be brushed daily. Just try and get her used to the brush with treats. And the slicker brush works great with Bichons. :)

Good Luck and i hope this Helps!! :)

How Are Bichon Frises?

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

how are these dogs around toddlers and young kids? Are they hard to train and are they high maintenance? About how much do they cost?

Bichons are excellent, loving, intelligent dogs. They are loyal, and seem almost telepathically able to sense your mood and comfort you. However, they may not be the best choice for children because they are so small.
They are highly trainable, but smaller dogs tend to be a bit harder to housetrain than large dogs (not a rule, just a generalization, please don’t yell at me!) This is mostly due to the fact that smaller dogs are harder to keep track of, and because your house seems a lot bigger to them, they’re more likely to designate an “out of the way” spot to use as a potty.
They’re very high maintenance, needing a thorough brushing a minimum of twice weekly, and an expensive haircut every six weeks. Bichons in particular look awful with short haircuts, so their breed cut really needs to be maintained. (Unlike Shih Tzus and mini poodles, who can look rather nice with a utilitarian short clip)
Expect to pay several hundred to a thousand dollars for a well-bred Bichon. Beware of breeders asking more than this, they are often unethical and only out for a profit.
