Whats the Difference Between a Bichon Frise and a Minature Poodle?

I was once told the Bichon Frise came from the poodle…a mixing between poodle and another breed and they are closely related dogs.

I don’t know if thats true or not.

They seem like very similar dogs. I’ve never had a bichon but I’ve had 3 poodles and they are great dogs.

So just looking for some info on the differences and such

Bichon Frise are such beautiful dogs. The breed is a cross between a Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle. They originated in the Mediterranean area and ended up in France, where they got the name "Bichon Frise", which suits them because the name means "curly lap dog".
They definitely have the same hair as the Poodle. It is white and has the same curly hair like Poodles. Their face is also similar to the Poodle. They do need grooming as with Poodles, about once a month, and it’s best to brush or comb them once a day to make sure their hair does not get knots.
The Bichon Frise is a beautiful dog. They are very loving, smart and loyal dogs. They also love to play.
The main difference between the 2 breeds, the Bichon Frise and the Poodle, is the body shape and size. The Poodle has a slender shape, while the Bichon Frise is a little more broad. Also, Poodles usually weigh anywhere from 6 to 10 pounds, and the Bichon Frise weighs around 10 to 18 pounds. So they have a little more stocky build, but they are very beautiful.
Hope I was able to give you a little information about the Bichon Frise breed. They definitely do have some Poodle features.
Best of luck. Hope I helped.

They’re two completely different breeds. Selective breeding is what gave us the purebreds we currently have today. Bred for a specific purpose, with certain characteristics, etc. The Bichon Frise was created with the Poodle, yes, as well as the Barbet Water Spaniel. They’re still very different breeds, although technically the Bichon is closely related to the Poodle.

The Bichon Frise is descended from the Barbet or Water Spaniel. The name "bichon" is actually a contraction of "Barbichon" and the Poodle’s origins may have begun with the Barbet as well, but unlike their Mediteranian cousins, the Bichon, the Poodle (Pudel) was probably developed in Germany and then into France.

The Bichon in type, has a shorter leg, a longer muzzle and is always pristine white.

The Poodle comes in three recognized sizes, Toy, Miniature and Standard. It is taller in proportion with longer legs than the Bichon and has a slightly more delicate head and muzzle.

Bichons are from the poodle family: The Bichons are descended from the ancient ancestors of the Poodle, the Barbet, a water spaniel. From this, the Barbichon, a small curly coated water spaniel and another name for this family, was created. The Bichons are a Mediterranean breed, generally named for the region from where they originated. The original breeds were the Bichon Tenerife, from the Canary Islands; the Bichon Maltais, or Maltese; and the Bichon Bolognese, or simply Bolognese. There is argument on whether the Tenerife is the original stock for all Bichons, or whether the Maltese (which seems to be an old type found on the islands before even the Barbet was known) is the progenitor of the Bichons, through its breeding with the Barbets. Ultimately, most of the modern Bichon breeds have developed by introducing a variety of dogs to the Barbichon type, creating a family with recognizable characteristics in both temperament and type but no single distinct progenitor.

The Bichons were the court dogs of medieval Europe, especially finding favor in France, Italy and Spain. The French word bichonner, which means to pamper or doll up, derives from the be-ribboned and lavish lifestyles of the Bichon of Henry III of France, who was carried in a little basket wherever the King went. Bichons buzz around with energy and suffer from separation anxiety.
