Can My 3 Year Old Bichon Frise Dog Play With a Cat ?

I was wondering if any breeds would play with him . Cause first of all my dog is the size of a large cat ( some of his pills are for cats ) and second of all Bichon Frise’s go really well with cats . I am thinking of getting a cat please help !

I would go to a shelter and ask for a cat that has been in a home with dogs before (and got along with them). The good thing is that you got the dog first. Cats, if not used to being around many animals since "kittenhood", will rarely accept a new pet in the family. See how your dog is around cats, then introduce the cat you get slowly to the dog. Keep them in separate rooms for a while and let them meet a few minutes a day, gradually making it longer until they seem to get along fine. How about a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cats? These are big breeds that can hold their own and therefore won’t be too scared of your dog.

Why would you need another animal? Preferably if you don’t have the time to be a play mate to your own dog.

Can they get along? Yes, they can. Any dogs can get along with anything, vise versa. What does the size have to do with getting a cat exactly?

Lots of cats will play with dogs. Bengals typically get on well with dogs. Seriously, it’s never the breed. It’s always the personalities and the socialization of both animals.

You may want to introduce him to a cat before you actually get one, see how well they get along and determine if he is cat socialized or friendly. Make your decision from this experience.

It depends on your dog’s personality. If he’s usually friendly around other animals, then he will probably be ok with a cat in the house. If he shows aggression, then he probably won’t accept the cat right away.

Cats usually ignore dogs. But, if you get a particularly timid cat it might be too stressed out by your dog. You should adopt one from a shelter. They can recommend one that will get along with your dog.

It isn’t so much a breed issue as a temperament issue. To be sure, breeds with a high prey drive are less likely to be a good match for a cat, but for all other breeds it varies dog-by-dog. And cat-by-cat.

Do you have a friend with a dog-friendly cat? If so, try testing your dog with the cat. If your dog does ok, adopt a cat who previously lived w/ dogs and is ok with them.

The size isn’t really a determining factor.

Also, be sure you are prepared to deal with things like the dog getting into kitty litter, the dog wanting to eat kitty’s tasty high-fat kitty kibble, etc.
