My Bichon Frise Puppy Is 5 Months Old. When Should I Get His Hair Clipped ?

Hi Jennifer!
Yes, 5 months old a pup, the Bichon Frise develops a heavy coat. Soft and cottony, the coat can easily become matted especially when exposed to moisture.

If you have a professional groomer in your neighbourhood, I strongly advise you to bring your pup there at least once in 6 weeks, for washing, trimming, doing the nails, ears and teeth.

The brushing and combing of your pup you should do daily. First brush the coat thoroughly with the slicker brush and then complete the procedure by combing. When combing, you will be surprised how many knots are left in the coat although it has been brushed already! If you come across a matted area, brush it again with help of a little hair conditioner.

Now. Get him used to it while he's young.

After he has completed his series of vaccines. Best not to risk any possible exposure to diseases.

Even if you don't get him completely clipped at this age, get him used to the whole grooming process. Many people wait until their long haired puppy is 10-12 months old before they ever bring it in to get groomed, without ever touching it with a brush or anything else. By this time the puppy has no tolerance for any of this stuff, and because the owner waits until it is in bad need of grooming, it starts off with a bad experience. The sooner the puppy gets in, the better experience he will have, and the less he will mind getting groomed.
