Im Getting a Bichon Frise Puppy in a Couple of Weeks, and Was Wondering Weather They Carrie a Doggy Smell ?

Also wondering how often they need to be cut, if i want it to be kept short ?

No they do NOT have that typical doggy odour… the only time mine smells is when she's rolled in fox scent! You have to put a lot of time into combing them…. it depends on your dog how often you'd need to have the coat cut. They ARE prone to tooth decay so I would suggest you get into the habit and routine of daily tooth brushing early on. Hope you enjoy your pup, they are so loving and adorable!

Seems to me that people have replied here when they haven't GOT Bichons and don't KNOW anything about them! They do not smell, so all the people saying all dogs smell are wrong. People are replying for the sake of it when they have no idea what they are saying….

Bichons are difficult to house train and train, I have been told that by different people and my vet. BUT breed isn't an excuse to let the dog misbehave. Start training EARLY and get into a good routine. Lots of reward and patience!

All dogs can carry a doggie smell. You are getting a very high maintenance dog, and the hair will need to be groomed at least once a month. If you give baths often (no more than once a week) you can avoid the smell, assuming your dog does not spend large amounts of time outdoors.

not a tremendous doggy smell although all dogs have certain amounts of oil in their skin.

Clip about once a month for a close cut

All dogs have a doggy smell if left outside or dirty,.. that's like a human.
    Bichons just don't shed.

Worried about when to cut fur already? I think you are worrying too prematurely,.. get puppy 1st and enjoy!
    Gd. luck.

Yep all dogs have some type of smell. Get a book about the type of pet you will be bringing home, reading up on the subject is a good start. Do it before you bring the dog home.

Check out different websites too. Find other owners in your area and talk to them as well.

Bichons are hypoallergenic – so they usually don't have a "doggy" smell to them. If they do smell it may be from anal glands (which can be expressed during grooming) or ear problems – such as mites,or dirt build up.

As for the grooming – most puppies don't need to be groomed very often. Once every month in the spring and summer and once ever 2-3 months in the fall and winter. I know of a few people (having worked in a grooming salon) who kept their puppy cut really short all year round and just used sweaters when it got cold.

    Good Luck

Yes, they carry a dog smell, mainly because they're dogs. It's not a nasty smell though. As for cutting, I could be wrong, but I thought that bichons in their natural state just had the cutest curls that didn't need to be clipped too often. It's when they're all fluffed up that they need to be cut.

All dogs smell if you dont have a good hygeine routine, its normally their bedding and stuff that smells more than the dog (except for farting of course which little ones are notorious for) i have little dogs!
Just wash the bed once a week and use a good cleaner for the wee (assuming its a puppy of course)!

Dont bath to often as it can irritate the skin :))

As mentioned above, all dogs smell. This does NOT mean they should be washed too often though. If they are washed too often they can loose the essential oils in their coat. In order to find out how often they need their coats trimming, speak to a professional dog groomer.

No they don't have the typical doggie smell. I know cos I have owned one. So don't listen to other people chatting rubbish saying they do smell like all dogs. Yes they do need regular grooming and hair cuts about every 6-8 weeks to keep it short.

Congrats on your new family member.

Bichons tend to be rather clean, and are on the low end of the "smelly" spectrum. They are also hypoallergenic and do not shed, both of which are distinct advantages.

On the downside, they are prone to skin problems, and their hair matts badly. You need to brush the dog quite frequently (at least twice a week) especially if it spend much time outdoors. Yo can't bathe them too frequently due to the skin issues – but you must brush them religiously. It does help to keep their hair short. We have ours bathed and groomed once a month.

They tend to be on the difficult side as far as training is concerned. My bichon is two years old and has only now reached the point where I sort-of trust her not to potty inside the house and not to bolt if she gets off the leash. In comparison to my poodle she is a terribly slow learner, and much more hyperactive.

every dog has a doggy smell my bichons don't smell unless they have been out side rolling in the dirt i clean their teeth and their ears they go to the groomers every 6 to 8 weeks but i brush them every day you will not regret getting a bichon believe me but you will need a lot of patience when it comes to toilet training as the are sure lazy but only if you allow them to be they are so loyal and just another tip never spray your bichons coat with anything or put talc on the coat because it will drive them mad( kc reg breeder)

    I have one, called Jack.

They have the best personalities around, very laid back and friendly.

They need brushed EVERY DAY and I'm being serious, if not their fur matts underneath and you'll see your puppy go downhill in energy etc as it just hurts. Cut every 10 weeks, more intensive grooming if you want to keep the classic bichon shape (which i don't recommend!) Keeping him/her short is a great way for your puppy to be matt free but they look lovely all shaggy.

They are very clean dogs, not really carrying a smell – tip – if you want him to smell extra nice, a little talc does him wonders and you can buy dog sprays too. They are the more preferred dogs for people with allergies as they do not shed much hair (hence the extra extra brushing!)

Hope you get on well with your new puppy, start training him immediately!
