How Long Maximum Can a Bichon Frise Dog Be Left Alone For?

I've researed and many people said there very good at it and as many people work full time nowadays they have no choice.
and its better than them dying on streets.
BTW i dont have one yet so an ideal age to get one would be good too.

Please do not take offense to this ( I know you did not mean die literally), but I do not know of many Bichon Frise's that would be left on the street to die. They are gorgeous dogs, and if left outside alone, I am sure someone would pick him or her up in a moment. As far as leaving a Bischon Frise alone during the day, you can up to 5 hours, making sure you walk him once in the morning and at night. As long as you give the doggie lots of love when you are home, the 5 hours would be okay. You could put down puppy pads if you need to leave him alone for about 7 or 8. Please do not put in a kennel all day, that is cruel and you sound like a nice person. I know you would not do that. You are so lucky to have such a cute dog!! Wow.

You didn't say how old your Bichon is. My vet's rule of thumb is to take the number of months in age and add 1 (up to 8 hours).

Dogs can hold going to the bathroom for 8 hours. So you can leave a dog at home for 8 hours and it will be fine. Most people as you said work full time and usually that's how long people work. So 8 hours is how long any dog can be alone. Its best to crate train since your dog will be left alone for a while to make sure your dog does not get bored and destroys your house. And make sure to leave food and water too. And as soon as you get home give them lots of love and attention.

    *Hope this Helps!

they prefer to be with their owners.

Most people do have to work and if there is no one who can be home, the dog will manage.

    Not ideal though.

Why have a dog if you don't have the time to devote to it. No dog likes to be left alone for long periods of time….not fair to the dog.

Yes a potty trained Bichon Frise can go 5- 8 hours with pee pad training I would place them by the door so if you see pupp going to the door he needs out.

There is always the option of doggy daycare. If you find a good one, it is a great way for your dog to get exercise, socialization, and just plain be a dog and have fun. There are many people who work or who have other commitments in their lives that they cannot be with their pet 24 (so other posters please stop being ridiculous).

Of course we would all love to spend our entire day lounging around, spoiling our pets, but the problem with this is if you have a pet, you have to have money, for food, vet work, GROOMING, etc..Therefore, most people MUST work.

Doggy daycare is a great solution and if you are lucky, you might be able to find a dog trainer who does it out of their home. Depending on the area, you should be able to spend 10 or less a day.

Oh, and these are great little dogs. If properly socialized, they would make a great little companion at any age.

The typical puppy can hold its bladder for the number of months it is old in hours +1. Mind you this is a typical and rough estimation. This does not mean that the puppy shoudl be left alone to hold it for 10 hours. It simply means a 4 month old puppy should be able to hold it for 5 hours. This might help to give you some figures to be able to figure out an age that is good for you. When my Miniature Pinschers are learning house training, I put them in a larger wire cage (36 inches long.) I buy them at Walmart for around $50. I put a Litter pan on one side of the cage and a blanket on the other. This lets them go to the potty when they need and they do not have to lay in it. I find it works great for puppies and older dogs that simply can not hold it while i am gone. You can also put food and a water bottle in their. It make a very cozy little nook for them. If you have to be gone for more than 5-6 hours, I would set up a cage system like the one I discribed.

Longest time to leave any dog alone is 4 hours. I think it is unfair for people to get dogs and go out to work every day for 8 hours or more.

Breed isn't the issue, it is usually 1 hour for each month of age, plus 1 hour, so a two-month-old puppy cannot be alone/hold its potty for more than 3 hours at the most. So if you are getting a puppy, you may need a dog walker, pet sitter, doggie day care, come home during lunch break, get family help, or others to help, just when the puppy is first little. The bladder isn't grown until 6-months-old, so keep that in mind if you are considering a puppy. A dog should be fully potty trained by 1-year-old, so a dog, would be fine when you are at work. Most dogs go back to bed 10 minutes after you leave for work anyway. Good luck.

You should never really leave a dog for more than 4 to 5 hours. I f you work full time you really need to go home at lunch time or arrange for a dog walker to come .
