Barking is as normal of a behavior for dogs as breathing is for humans. Dealing With Bichon Frise Separation Anxiety

Because they are such sociable and affectionate dogs, the Bichon Frise has a tendency to become too attached to their owners and/or their surroundings. Sudden separations from their owners, like when they are going on a vacation, or a move to a new home can lead to the development of Bichon Frise separation anxiety.

Separation anxiety is a form of anxiety that is experienced by a dog or puppy – in this case a Bichon Frise – caused by separation from the significant nurturing care and influence of their owner or from familiar surroundings. Aside from being parted from their owners and changes to their environment, Bichon Frise separation anxiety can also be triggered by loud noises associated with the separation, such as bangs, booms, fireworks, or thunderstorms.

There are many ways by which Bichon Frises manifest separation anxiety. One way is by constantly following you wherever you go. If it loses sight of you even for just a few minutes, it becomes very restless, pacing around the house frantically and whining. Some Bichons display aggressive behaviors just to get your attention, such as growling, barking or even biting. In your absence, the dog exhibits destructive behaviors, like chewing or gnawing on furniture, and urinating or defecating in every part of the home, including your bed.

Crate training can help alleviate separation anxiety if done when your Bichon is still a puppy. In your absence, the crate or sleeping area for the dog becomes a place of sanctuary. A common advice given by pet owners is that the toy should be given 10 to 20 minutes before you leave the house. Not only will this distract your Bichon, your puppy will make a connection with your departure and a reward (namely the toy).

Never make departures or arrivals such a huge fanfare as this will only aggravate the anxieties that your dog is already experiencing.

Bark Collars Do Not Harm Your Dog

Before enlarging on whether dog collars are ethical or not, we should first try to understand the reason why dogs bark in the first place. Sometimes they have very good reasons for barking (besides the obvious that they are dogs and that is what dogs do!) such as being left outside or perhaps they are lonely, bored, hungry or thirsty. Dogs are curious creatures. If you challenge their curiosity, hide something from them or there is an intriguing event happening outside the fence, they will definitely want to find out what’s going on.

For some dogs it’s actually a learned behavior which is negatively reinforced by giving the dogs extra attention with doggie treats or extra TLC in hopes of pacifying and quieting them down, when what is really happening is that it is teaching the dogs that this is indeed a good behavior and that if they want more attention, all they need to do is to continue barking all the more.

People who lack proper information have advertised the bark collar like it is some torturing device for an animal. The truth is that a bark collar can come in many options, of which none is so dangerous as you’d believe. If you consider purchasing such a device, then you should do some research oon all options available. One is that this is not something that will necessarily need to be worn by your furry friend 24/7 and it is a far better option in my opinion than putting your dog through what is known as debarking surgery.

This kind of medical intervention is rather invasive and consists of cutting off a part of the dog’s larynx that is responsible for creating the barking sound. The surgery removes the tissue and following the surgery, dogs are only left with barely just a whisper of a bark.
