House breaking your
Bichon Frise puppy should be priority upon his or her arrival to their new home.
Your new puppy needs structure and a routine to follow. He or she is depending
on you to be the leader. Dogs are pack animals; and every pack has an alpha leader.
Your puppy needs this; and you do not assume the title, he will. This could mean
puddles, piles, and chewed shoes.
One of the best was to potty train your
Bichon Frise puppy will involve their crate. It is important that the pup not
have free access to the house all the time. Except for play time and potty breaks,
he should be in his crate. And especially when you are out of the house, or not
able to directly supervise your pup. There is not anything cruel or inhumane about
using a crate. You are not going to hurt your puppy’s feelings by putting him
or her in there.
Let’s Do The Potty Training Again
All dogs are,
by nature den animals. If you watch any nature show about wolves, they spend most
of their time in or around their den. They even eat in there; leaving only to
find food and potty. The crate makes house breaking your Bichon Frise that much
easier because any dog is bred to not want to soil where they sleep and eat. You
can actually put your puppy on a potty schedule, taking hem out every three or
four hours to do their business.
You will need to have patience during the
time it takes you to house break your Bichon Frise. They are quick to learn new
trick, but obviously do not consider peeing on newspaper a trick. The boys do
seem to pick it up faster, mainly because of their desire to mark every inch of
your property. Do not use harsh words and a lot of scolding when you find a mess
in the house. You can let your puppy know this was bad without swatting, spanking,
or yelling.
Your Bichon Frise will learn training much faster if you praise
for the good things. This is a dog that loves to get attention; he or she will
pick up on what they do to receive the praise. After he or she is three months
old, accidents in the crate should wind down to none. Be sure you get him or her
outside first thing in the morning. Small bits of a treat or a piece of their
puppy food can be used as a reward for a job well done.
Puppy training
pads make good aids in potty training your Bichon Frise, but do not solely rely
on them as you only house breaking method. There are also sprays that can attract
a puppy to a designated area. Again, they make great aids but should not be the
only thing you use.
If you have not already purchased a Bichon Frise, perhaps
consider going through a Bichon
Frise rescue/adoption center.
