  • Grooming Your Bichon Frise

Proper grooming and care of your Bichon Frise’s coat is very important. They are considered to be a very high maintenance breed, requiring bi-weekly brushing at the very least. If not, their hair can easily become matted and tangled. Most Bichon Frise owners take their pets to a professional groomer approximately once a month. In between trips to the doggy salon, you can bathe and give your Bichon Frise a haircut at home.

Brushing and touch-up grooming for your Bichon Frise should begin when he or she is just a puppy. It may take some time for them to get used to the look and feel of the brush. On your first home grooming day, allow the pup to sniff the brush, and move slowly so as not to frighten the little guy. As puppies, there coat does not get matted like it does when they are adults. The main purpose of the brushing is to slowly adapt the puppy to the process. It should be an enjoyable experience for both you and that Bichon Frise pup you care for so much.

The Low Down On Home Grooming

One important aspect of Bichon Frise care is keeping their teeth clean. You should brush their teeth at least once a week to prevent tarter buildup. Allowing tartar to collect can, at the least cause bad breath and at worse contribute to gum disease. If you want to go that extra mile for you Bichon Frise, dog toothpaste is available through specialty pet stores and online.

That one bath every month with the groomer should be enough for your Bichon Frise. You can also bathe your pet at home, but there is specific information and rules you should follow Having a check list, and/or a grooming book on hand can hopefully keep you from giving your Bichon that infamous “bowel” haircut you were probably received from your mother in first grade.

You should brush before and after a bath, and again the following day to keep that coat white and shiny. Make sure you rinse your Bichon Frise thoroughly to avoid any damage to their beautiful coat. The nails need to be trimmed eve few week; this is another something you can do at home. You may be unsure how to do this correctly; contact the breeder, your veterinarian, or your groomer and ask for someone to show you how to properly trim your dog’s rapidly growing nails.
A properly groomed and bathed Bichon Frise will be a much happier dog. There are specific tools you will need to give your pet a quality “cut-n-wash” at home. Find out what you need to groom your Bichon Frise.
